Oral sedation

Oral sedation is a common technique used to help patients remain calm and relaxed during dental treatment. Patients take a pill form sedative about an hour prior to their dental appointment. The oral sedative results in a very relaxed and calm mood that will allow your caregiver to effectively perform your treatment.

PATIENT INFORMATION

The procedure

Oral sedation is often a good choice for sedation during longer treatment appointments (over one hour). Many times, patients treated under oral sedation remark that the procedure “Did not feel like it took as long as it did”. Oral sedation commonly makes the appointment seem shorter in duration to the patient.

Treatment options

  • There are several safe and effective medications that can be used for oral sedation. Dr. Seale will carefully review your health history and any medications that you are taking before recommending an oral sedative. While sedated, you will be monitored continuously for your safety.

  • You will need a trusted driver to bring you to your appointment and take you home after. Your driver will also be responsible for any post-treatment directions you might need to follow.

  • If you feel that you would benefit from oral sedation during your treatment, please let us know. We will be glad to discuss your sedation options and help you select a sedation level that will allow you to be relaxed and comfortable during your treatment.
